Torres del Paine photography workshop
March 29th to April 5th 2009

In conjunction with
Andean Trails the UK's leading South American Adventure Travel Company, I will be conducting a photographic safari in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile during April 2009.

Paine National Park, created in 1959, is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers: the fauna, flora and landscapes are unique. Paine means dark blue in the Tehuelche language as it is the colour the mountains become at dawn. Days spent in the park will be filled with breathtaking views of rock spires, snow covered peaks, shimmering glaciers, jewel coloured lakes and sun scorched grasslands dotted with wildflowers.  Wildlife abounds here and you share the trail with guanacos, Darwin’s rhea, condors, Chilean flamingos, fox, buff-necked ibis, swans, geese, woodpeckers and even once in a while the elusive South American puma. Our photographic safari takes in some of the highlights of Paine including the Grey glacier, the vivid blue and green Lago Pehoe, and the superb views over the Towers and Horns, central to the massif.

The trip will be limited to 8 participants and will take place within the confines of the national park, spending quality time at each location photographing the surrounding landscapes and wildlife.

The trip is open to anyone who has a passion for photography. The aim of the trip is to allow each participant quality time at some fabulous locations, with accommodation, food and logistics all taken care of.

Itinerary

Day 1 - March 29

Arrive today. Meet at hotel. (Dinner)

Day 2 - March 30

We set off after breakfast and travel by mini bus to Torres del Paine national park. This is pretty much a full day journey, but we will stop for lunch in Puerto Natales (3 hour drive) before continuing to Torres del Paine (2 hour drive). Our first nights stay will be at a working farm, situated on the shores of Laguna Verde, with lovely views towards the Cuernos (Horns of Paine). (Lunch & Dinner)

Day 3 - March 31

In the morning, we will spend time photographing the farm and Gauchos who work here. Breakfast and lunch will be held here before we move on in the afternoon towards the shores of Lago Sarmiento to photograph, arriving in the evening at a lodge where we will stay for the night and have dinner. The lodge is situated on an island in Lago Pehoe and has commanding views over the Cuernos. This will provide easy access for morning shots of the mountain range. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 4 - April 1

Early morning start with a 1 hour hike to the top of Mirador Pehoe for one of the best photographic views of the Cuernos range with Lago Pehoe below. Return to Hosteria for breakfast before heading back out into the surrounding region for more photography. Lunch will be a picnic wherever we are in the park. Afternoon spent in the surrounding area before we drive onwards to our next night's stay and dinner at the next Hosteria. After dinner, it will be possible for participants to shoot the icebergs in Lago Grey. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 5 - April 2

At the end of winter, Lago Grey is filled with bergs that have calved from Glacier Grey. We will spend the morning photographing the bergs in Lago Grey and have lunch at a near by hosteria. In the afternoon we will take the boat trip up Lago Grey to the face of the glacier. This should provide plenty of opportunities to photograph the ice from up close as well as shoot the bergs in the lake. Transfer to our next hosteria at the other edge of the park for the night and dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 6 - April 3

Early morning start, heading out to Laguna Azul in order to photograph from this excellent location views of the Torres. We will spend some further time in this region of the park photographing the wildlife such as Guanacos in the afternoon. Return to hosteria for dinner and our last night within the park. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 7 - April 4

Early morning start. We will hope to obtain sunrise shots of the Cuernos from the eastern side of the park, before setting off for Punta Arenas, arriving in the afternoon. Tonight we will have our final dinner together and last night at the hotel before saying farewell. Hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 8 - April 5

Tour ends after breakfast.
